A training split is the structure that determines which muscle groups you train on which days of the week. The three most popular resistance training splits (full body, upper/lower, and push pull legs) differ primarily in how frequently each muscle is trained per week and how training volume is distributed across sessions. The best split for any individual depends on their training experience, weekly availability, and primary goal.
This is one of the most debated topics in fitness, and most of the debate misses the point. All three splits work. The differences between them are meaningful but not dramatic. What matters most is matching the structure to your life so you actually follow it.
A full body split trains all major muscle groups in every session. You typically train 3 days per week with rest days between sessions. Each workout includes at least one compound movement for the lower body (squat or deadlift variation), upper body push (bench or overhead press), and upper body pull (row or pull-up).
The primary advantage of full body training is muscle frequency. Each muscle is stimulated three times per week, which is particularly valuable for beginners whose nervous systems and muscles adapt rapidly to repeated exposure. Programs like StrongLifts 5x5 and Starting Strength use this structure.

The upper/lower structure trains each muscle group twice per week while allowing more volume per session than full body training. Upper days can include more chest, back, and shoulder work than a full body session would allow, since you are not also fitting in leg work. This makes it the most balanced structure for intermediate lifters who need more volume than full body provides but cannot commit to six days per week.
A popular variant, PHUL (Power Hypertrophy Upper Lower), dedicates one upper and one lower day to strength-focused work (heavy compound lifts at low reps) and one upper and one lower day to hypertrophy-focused work (moderate weights, higher reps). This structure develops both strength and muscle size simultaneously, making it one of the most efficient four-day options available.
Push Pull Legs groups movements by function rather than anatomy. Push days train chest, shoulders, and triceps (all muscles involved in pushing motions). Pull days train back and biceps (the muscles used in pulling motions). Leg days train quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves.
The standard PPL structure runs six days per week: Push, Pull, Legs, Push, Pull, Legs, with one rest day. This trains each muscle group twice weekly with high total volume per session and per week. It is the structure that allows the most absolute volume of any common split, making it the preferred choice for intermediate and advanced lifters whose primary goal is maximising muscle size.
The significant caveat is recovery. Six training days per week requires excellent sleep, adequate nutrition, and a lifestyle that supports it. People with high-stress jobs, inconsistent sleep, or heavy physical work outside the gym often underperform on PPL because they cannot recover from the volume. Running PPL at 70% effort due to poor recovery will produce worse results than running upper/lower consistently at full effort.

This is the primary argument against traditional bro splits (chest Monday, back Tuesday, etc.) and the strongest argument for upper/lower and PPL over once-per-week body-part splits.
Importantly, the research comparing twice-weekly to three-times-weekly frequency with equated volume shows less clear differences. Muscle protein synthesis elevates for roughly 24–48 hours after training. Three-times-weekly training keeps that signal more continuously elevated, which is why full body training is particularly effective for beginners. But the practical advantage of 3x weekly frequency diminishes as lifters advance and need more volume per session than full body training can accommodate.

Three days: full body. Four days: upper/lower. Five or six days: PPL. Do not pick a split based on your best week. Pick it based on your average week. A four-day split you complete 48 weeks per year beats a six-day split you complete 20 weeks per year.
Less than 12 months of serious training: full body. One to three years: upper/lower or PPL depending on days available. Three-plus years: PPL or more sophisticated periodised structures. Beginners do not benefit meaningfully from the higher volume that PPL offers; they respond to almost any consistent stimulus and are better served by the higher frequency of full body training.
Pure strength with low time investment: full body or upper/lower. Maximum muscle size: PPL. Balanced strength and size: upper/lower, particularly PHUL. Athletic performance: full body or upper/lower with sport-specific additions.

Beginners on a well-designed full body program will add muscle at close to their genetic maximum rate. For beginners, yes. Running PPL before you have outgrown full body training means six days of junk volume producing the same results you would get from three good sessions. For intermediate and advanced lifters who have the recovery capacity and genuinely need the volume, PPL is one of the most effective structures available.
